Generation Wisdom
“Praise the LORD.
Blessed are those who fear the LORD, who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.”
Today’s Text: Psalm 112 (Living Life Daily Devotional)
Praise is the natural, common sense response of those who “fear the LORD” and “find great delight in His commands.” The generation—that is, the society—that is guided and operates on those values will be “blessed” and called “upright.” And the children of a generation that fears the LORD and delights in His commands will be mighty in the land.
Blessed is what every generation wants to be. But such blessedness is not guaranteed for any given generation. The children can lose the blessedness they inherit. It is the responsibility of each generation to pursue blessedness through “fear of the LORD” and “delight in His commands.”
If you think about it, people start to lose fear of the LORD when they stop delighting in His word, the tree of life. What do they delight in instead? The tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
When we choose the tree of the knowledge of good and evil instead of the tree of life, we are basically choosing to reject the blessings that God wants us to have. Those blessings can only come on God’s terms, not our own. But from the very start, we have thought that we could acquire greater blessings than what God has presented to us. Ultimately, that is the lie that the devil has tricked us with, and we will continue to be tricked by it until the return of the King.
But if that is a foregone conclusion, why should we even bother to fear the LORD and delight in His word? That is the question all believers must resolve in their hearts.
Father, You have given us the way of life. You have given us Your word so that we might pursue the blessings that You have wanted us to have from the very start. Forgive me for seeking the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Give me understanding that I may delight in the tree of life always. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
