‘All the trees of the forest will know that I the LORD bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish.  I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.’
— Ezekiel 17:24

Today’s Text: Ezekiel 17:11-24 (Living Life Daily Devotional)

God is sovereign, meaning that God is in total control of all things. But the Sovereign LORD is not capricious, meaning that He does not act based on how He might be feeling at any given moment. Humans do that. God does not. And thank God for that.

We cannot understand the fullness of God’s nature. However, based on what He Himself has revealed to us in Scripture, God’s sovereignty will always be consistent in two ways: (1) in manifesting His glory in all the earth and in the heavenly realms (Psalm 108:5; Philippians 2:9-11), and (2) in working for the good of those who love-fear Him (Jeremiah 32:40; Romans 8:28).

How can we adequately describe the glory of God who is all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, and everlasting? There is not even a human word that captures the love-fear that is due to Him. Maybe “worship” in its truest sense covers it. But even then, people might limit the idea of “worship” to a “worship service” or to the music portion of Sunday service.

Human language cannot adequately capture the goodness and greatness of the Sovereign LORD. And yet He has given us His word to reveal Himself to us to the degree that is possible with human language. And He has given us His Son to demonstrate to us the depths that He will go to accomplish (1) and (2) above.

The LORD has spoken, and He will do it. The only question for me is whether I will live my life accordingly under His sovereign hand.

Father, You are sovereign and worthy of all glory, honor, and praise. But my heart cannot grasp the greatness of Your sovereign love. Forgive me. So show me more of Your glory. Show me more of Your power. You have done so, and it is fearsome. Make me cling to You and nothing else. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
