Walk in Faithfulness
“‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’
’Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’”
Today’s Text: Matthew 14:22-36 (Living Life Daily Devotional)
When we focus on Jesus in this story, the lesson for us is that He is the Lord over all creation and takes care of His followers. When we focus on the disciples, the lesson for us is that we need to trust in Him and keep our eyes fixed on him, especially during the storms that come in our lives.
Either way, we need both lessons and so the lessons are for us.
When we see the power of God in this world and especially in our lives, it is the most natural thing in the world to step out boldly in faith and follow Him. But the storms of life, they come, and they test our resilience and perseverance.
Because Christ doesn’t need us to walk on water. But Christ wants our faithfulness—and even that, not for Him, but for our welfare.
There’s nothing we need to prove to Jesus. If we can be honest, most of the time, we’re just showing off to other people—proving to them how devoted we are, how faithful we are.
Ironically, though, that compulsion to prove ourselves to others is what actually leads to our failures. On the other hand, self-awareness of our fragility and need is what sustains us in the hands of Christ.
Father, You are my Strength. If I am strong, let me be strong for the sake of those who are weak, for those who do not know how to be weak yet. Yet, in my own weakness is my greatest strength. Let me not take my eyes off of You, Lord.
