Beyond the Tomb

READ LUKE 24:1-8
Have someone read the text aloud slowly to the House Church. Have a quiet moment for a minute after reading the passage so people can take time to reflect.

MAIN IDEA
Because Jesus rose from the dead as He promised, we can move beyond fear, doubt, and uncertainty by trusting His finished work and remembering His faithful Word.

SUMMARY OF TEXT
The followers of Christ come to Jesus’ tomb expecting death, but instead they find an empty grave and hear the angels declare that Jesus has risen. Their confusion is answered when they are reminded of what Jesus had already promised previously, that He would be crucified and rise again on the third day. The words of Jesus confirm the reason for His death, burial, and resurrection. Humanity is separated from God because of sin, but Jesus willingly died in our place as an atoning sacrifice and rose again so that we could be forgiven and have eternal life through faith in Him. As the women remembered His words, their fear turned into joy and hope. Just as the women’s fear turned into joy when they remembered Jesus’ words, we too can find hope and courage when we recall God’s promises in our lives.

APPLICATION
How can we be 100% sure Heaven is our eternal home through Christ?

  1. Recognize that we are born with a sinful nature. Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, all humanity is born with a sinful nature and separated from God. No one has to be taught to sin because it is part of our fallen condition.

  2. Our sins separate us from God. Even one sin deserves judgment (Hell), and no amount of good works or religion can save us or bridge the gap between us and God.

  3. Jesus came to die on the cross for our sins and rose again. God demonstrated His love by sending His Son to be the sacrifice for our sins; through His death, Jesus defeated sin, and through His resurrection, He defeated death.

  4. We are saved and receive eternal life when we turn from our sin and place our faith in Jesus Christ alone as Lord and Savior. No longer trusting in ourselves, our works, or our religion, but in Christ alone to forgive us and restore us to God.
