In Christ, we have life-giving hope in every circumstance.

CHRIST IS OUR COMFORT AS WE FACE TROUBLE
This woman in our passage was a widow and then she lost her one and only son. She had probably lost most of her means of financial support, too. And so, this woman was not only experiencing deep, deep grief, she was also facing deep, deep trouble. But Jesus “saw her” in her suffering, and Jesus sees us in our suffering, too. He understands our suffering, because He bore the suffering of all of humanity upon Himself when He went to the cross (Isaiah 53:3-4). But the suffering of humanity is our own fault, not His. And even though it was no fault of His own, the Son of God became the Son of Suffering and went to the cross for all the sins of all of humanity across all of time. He voluntarily took upon Himself the punishment that was due to sinful humanity. Why? Because Jesus is our Lord, and He loves us so, so much. Jesus is our Lord, and He has deep, deep compassion for us in our suffering. And so Jesus’s exhortation to “Don’t cry” comes from the Lord of heaven and earth, and Jesus offer more than just words.

CHRIST IS OUR SALVATION AS WE FACE DEATH
Touching the funeral bier would make Jesus defiled. Yes! Jesus has great compassion for us, and He will stop at nothing to help us in our time of desperate need. But in the end, we will all have to face death. Jesus would raise the son to life, but he would eventually die again. Death is a curse, and it was never meant to be a part of the human condition. But death came to all of us because of sin (Genesis 3). But God demonstrated His great love for us by sending His Son as a sacrifice of atonement for our sins, even while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). Ultimately, we see in this episode Jesus’s absolute and effortless power and authority over even death. And so while God has given humanity a great capacity for all kinds of wonderful stuff, humanity will never, ever be able to solve the problem of death. Death is a problem that is in the hands of God and God alone. And it is because of God’s great, great love for us, that we can have the hope of eternal life (John 3:16). Where our capability ends, that is where Jesus’s capability just begins.

CHRIST IS OUR LORD AS WE FACE HIS RETURN
Jesus is Lord, and He is coming back. Luke refers to Jesus as “Lord” in the fullest sense of the word, as in Lord of heaven and earth. As Lord, Jesus has a responsibility to take care of His people. Of course, it’s not merely about duty for Him. It’s because of His great love for us. But then, what about us? What is our responsibility as followers of Jesus Christ, given that Jesus is Lord and that Jesus is returning? First, we should recognize that Jesus is Lord of heaven and earth and praise Him with awestruck wonder. Second, as followers of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we should bear witness to Jesus Christ, especially considering that Jesus is coming back! There is a world out there full of people who desperately needs Jesus and desperately needs Jesus now. That is not to suggest that everyone has to become pastors or missionaries or evangelists. However, we must not let the voice of this world or the voice of our flesh or the voice of the devil hinder us from putting God’s agenda first in our lives!
