Principles of Wisdom
MAIN IDEA
Wisdom begins with a humble heart, is shaped by godly priorities, and leads to a life marked by God’s favor and guidance.
THE POSTURE OF WISDOM (v. 7)
When God appears to Solomon and invites him to ask for anything, Solomon doesn't respond with confidence in himself. Instead, he humbly confesses he doesn’t know what to do. A recognition of his inexperience. Solomon’s posture was one of humility, and that’s the first step toward wisdom. In today’s world, it’s easy to pretend we have it all together, to act like we’re in control and capable of handling everything. But wisdom begins when we admit we don’t have all the answers. Whether it's parenting, work, relationships, or spiritual growth, the wisest thing we can do is to come to God with a humble heart and ask Him to give us wisdom.
THE PRIORITY OF WISDOM (v. 8-9)
Solomon’s request reveals what matters most to him. Not wealth or revenge but discernment to lead God’s people faithfully. He recognizes the weight of responsibility placed on him and asks for a discerning heart as he leads the people. It was a spiritual priority. Solomon wasn’t seeking wisdom for personal gain, he was seeking it to fulfill God’s purpose for his life and for the people. That’s what makes this request so powerful. We must examine our own priorities. What do we truly value? Are we more concerned with comfort and convenience, or with living in a way that honors God? We are challenged to put God first, even when it costs us something. Wisdom means prioritizing what matters most to God.
THE PROVISION OF WISDOM (v. 10-14)
God was pleased with Solomon’s request because it was a selfless request. He asked for something that aligned with God’s heart and calling. As a result, God not only gave him wisdom but also added blessings Solomon didn’t ask for including wealth, honor, and a long life. When others see God working in our lives, they will want the same wisdom which is ultimately found in the gospel of Christ. Just as He gave Solomon exactly what he needed and more, He promises to guide and provide for us when we walk in obedience and seek His will above all else.
CONCLUSION
Solomon’s encounter with God shows that wisdom isn’t just having knowledge, it’s about knowing where to turn for direction. It begins with humility, grows through God-centered priorities, and results in blessing. Whether you’re making major life decisions or facing everyday challenges, the call is the same: seek wisdom from God. He promises to give it generously (James 1:5). Let us walk humbly, live wisely, and trust God to provide everything we need.
