Resurrected Life
THE MAIN IDEA
Through faith in Christ, we are raised from death to life. God gives us three remedies to heal and restore our very dry bones.
DRY BONES NEED FAITH IN GOD
Where is hope to be found when all hope is lost? The valley of very dry bones represented Israel. Their idolatry and disobedience demonstrated their lack of faith in God, and so they lost all hope—not so much in God, but in themselves. If our habit is to trust in ourselves, our bones will dry up, and our hope will be gone, too. What we hope for reveals what we have faith in. If our hope is in things of this world, then our faith is not in God, but in things of this world, and probably, it is faith in ourselves. Hope in anything other than God is basically idolatry. And idolatry will always fail us and leave us dry to the bone. But if we believe that God can raise the dead to life, the implications for our lives are mind-blowing. If our faith is in God above all things and before all things, He will always heal and restore our dry bones.
DRY BONES NEED THE WORD OF GOD
The prophesied word of God given to the bones is so prominent in this passage (verses 4, 7, 9, 10, 12). The word of God is life, and we need the word of God. Why do we resist, avoid it, or even hate engaging with the word of God? If the source of our healing is faith in God, then the instrument of our healing is the word of God. In fact, faith in God means faith in the word of God. Because the word of God defines our faith. We cannot know God without knowing the word of God. In that case, how can our dry bones ever be healed, let alone come to life? The word of God is the gateway to your relationship with Jesus Christ. So we need a regular diet of hearing the word of God preached. The preaching of God’s word is a prophetic ministry. Also, we need to engage in God’s word daily through reading and reflecting. Dry bones are hungry for the word of God for healing and restoration.
DRY BONES NEED THE SON OF GOD
The prophecy is a vision of the restoration of Israel out of exile from Babylon back to the land of God’s covenant promise. The fulfillment of that prophecy would seem to be impossible, except that that is exactly what happened through the decree of Cyrus, King of Persia, when he overthrew the Babylonian empire (and also Jeremiah’s and Isaiah’s prophecies). There are many hints and direct prophecies of the resurrection of the dead throughout the OT. But in the NT, not only are there prophecies of the resurrection of the dead to eternal life, there is also the direct eyewitness testimony of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, being resurrected from death to eternal life (1 Corinthias 15:3-5). But the resurrection of Jesus Christ was never meant to be an isolated incident. It was the confirmation and proof of Jesus’s promise that we too would be resurrected to eternal life together with Him through faith in Him (John 3:16). The reasons for our very dry bones are many in a world that is a broken mess due to sin. In such a world, there is one sure Remedy for our dry bones: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and Him crucified, resurrected, and returning.
