Steps to a Spirit-Filled Life
MAIN IDEA: We can live a Spirit-filled life when we remove what distracts us from God, respond to Him with wholehearted trust in every situation, and remain disciplined in daily obedience.
There are three steps to a Spirit-filled life:
STEP #1: REMOVE DISTRACTIONS
King Hezekiah tore down the idols and high places that kept God’s people from true worship. This included a bronze serpent statue that was initially meant to be a symbol of God’s mercy. Even good things can become idols or distractions in our lives. We must examine our hearts and remove anything that keeps us from prioritizing the Lord. When we clear away those distractions, we create room for God to fill our hearts with His presence.
STEP #2: RESPOND WITH TRUST
When the Assyrian Empire surrounded Jerusalem and threatened his reign, King Hezekiah responded with unwavering trust in God. Likewise, when we face uncertainty, we must surrender control to the Lord and trust Him even when we cannot see the outcome. Every step of obedience we take strengthens our faith and deepens our dependence on Him. When God is stirring our hearts, we just need to take that step.
STEP #3: REMAIN DISCIPLINED
Faith is not a one-time decision but a daily practice cultivated through consistent habits. King Hezekiah “held fast” to the Lord and “did not stop following Him.” Spirit-filled living requires consistent spiritual discipline, cultivated through habits of Bible reading, prayer, and fellowship. Spiritual discipline isn’t about achieving perfection, it’s about persistence, keeping our hearts aligned with His every day.
THOUGHT TO CONSIDER:
The first step toward a Spirit-filled life is to remove distractions. What distractions do we need to let go of today so that our heart can fully focus on the Lord?
