Never Thirst Again
THE MAIN IDEA
When Jesus quenches our thirst, we will never thirst again.
JESUS QUENCHES OUR THIRST WITH THE GOSPEL
The Samaritans were related to the Jews, but the relationship between them had become broken many years before. Around 400BC the Samaritans set up a rival temple to the one in Jerusalem on Mt. Gerizim. The Jews destroyed the Samaritan temple in 129BC. The intense hatred between the Jews and the Samaritans continued right up to Jesus’s day. So basically, Jesus went to Samaria to meet that woman for two reasons: to restore fellowship with the Samaritans and to plant the seed for future missionary activity starting with this one woman (Acts 1:8; Acts 8). The bottom line of why Jesus had to go through Samaria to meet that woman can be summarized in one verse, John 3:16.
JESUS QUENCHES OUR THIRST WITH THE SPIRIT
In the OT, a well was a place where “men could ‘pick up’ women” (Köstenberger). From that perspective, the conversation between the Samaritan woman and Jesus could be interpreted as flirtation—not for Jesus, but for the woman. Jesus is trying to talk about spiritual matters, but she thinks He is flirting with her, because that is all she knows, and that was the cultural narrative of wells. So when Jesus offers her “Living Water,” that is the Holy Spirit, she thinks that He is trying to woo her and continues to resist His “advances.” But when He tells her that anyone who drinks His water will never thirst, she reveals her felt need—she wants to avoid everyone in the town. She felt judged and shamed by all the people. We as broken people try to solve problems with human solutions, especially when it comes to relationships. But all that those solutions do is put a band-aid over wounds that can’t heal on their own. Oftentimes, the best solution might also be the most painful, requiring the most personal sacrifice. We need the Living Water of the Holy Spirit in our lives to help us work out the best solutions, the hardest solutions, to tackle the very core of the real problem in our lives—our sin. But an amazing thing happens whenever we surrender to the Holy Spirit. A doorway to forgiveness and reconciliation opens up that we couldn’t even see before.
JESUS QUENCHES OUR THIRST WITH THE WORD
The woman begins to think that maybe Jesus does have something to offer, and she ask Him to give it to her. But Jesus tells her to go and get her husband, even though He already knows her situation. She responds as if she has no partner, leaving herself an opening to perhaps start yet another relationship with Jesus. But then Jesus reveals what He already knows about her—not to condemn her, but to draw her into some self-reflection about who it is that she has been searching for all of her life. Jesus leads her to recognize that who she has been needing all along is Christ (verse 25). In the same way, Jesus knows everything about us. And when we come face to face with Jesus—when we gaze intently into the Living Word of God—our sin and our idolatry is exposed too. And once she comes to the realization that she needs Jesus Christ, Jesus tells her, “I, the One speaking to you— I am He” (verse 26). And n the same way, whenever we desperately need Jesus and desperately need Jesus now, there He is—the Living Word. If we want peace, joy, happiness, and real hope in our life, then we need to read the word of God, reflect on the word of God, study the word of God, and most of all, live your life according to the Living Word.

Is there someone you know who could just use some help? What do you think they need?
