7 The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.”

Numbers 21:7-8

Sinner. Intercessor. Forgiver. Those are the roles that we find throughout the Bible. Those are the roles we play every day as followers of Jesus Christ.

Christ became sin for us to take upon Himself God’s wrath against sin. All the sins of all of humanity across all time were piled upon Jesus at the cross. On the cross, Jesus became every single one of us and paid the penalty for every single one of us. The cross could not be the cross of Christ unless that were true.

Christ became our Intercessor, as well. He ascended into heaven and became our great High Priest to intercede before the Father on behalf of those who follow Him as Lord and Savior.

Christ became our forgiveness, too. Because He paid for all of our sins, all of our sins are already forgiven. All we need to do is to seek forgiveness, turn to Him, confess our sins, and our forgiveness is made complete.

By grace, through faith, we are in Christ. We are sinners who are in Christ, and so we too hang on the cross with Him. We are intercessors who are in Christ, and so we too may intercede with Him, knowing that God hears. We are forgivers who are in Christ, and so we too may forgive others with Him.

The fact that we are in Christ must never make us satisfied and complacent in our sin. Rather, we should make every effort to be like Him to the glory of God the Father.

Father, Your grace and mercy and forgiveness are unending. And yet I so easily lose sight of the holiness and righteousness I have in Christ. Where would I be without Your grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Make me more like my Lord. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
