10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.

11 I will remember the deeds of the LORD;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.

12 I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

Psalm 77:10-12

The God of yesterday is the God of today. The God of then and there is the God of here and now. The God of the Bible is the God of reality. The God of history is the God of my story.

And we appeal to that truth when we are in need of a miracle in our own lives and in our world. But the miracle that rules them all is the miracle of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. The miracle of Jesus’s resurrection is the miracle that everyone absolutely needs. Every other miracle that we could ever want is secondary to the one that brings us eternal life.

Even so, when I am in need of a miracle, I will pray for a miracle. And what is a miracle but an outcome that defies all expectations and logic? God is the engineer who orchestrates all outcomes. And God’s incomprehensible power is such that He does so even in the context of the free will that He has granted to every human being.

And why does God orchestrate any outcome one way or another except to reveal His glory? In fact, it may be that God orchestrates a terrible outcome so that we would seek a miracle in order to reveal His glory (John 9).

Does that make God an egomaniacal sociopath? If that is how we think, then surely we do not comprehend the nature and magnitude of the power of God—a power that is fueled by an absolute and pure love.

Whenever I need a miracle, I will remember the miracle of Jesus going to the cross to suffer the full wrath of God in my place because of my sins. And I will remember the miracle of Jesus being resurrected from the dead, so that I may also be resurrected from the dead.

Father, You are truly good. Every day, I am in need of Your love, mercy, and grace, and You provide for them every day. Thank You for the miracles You have borne in my life. May they always glorify Your name. But thank You especially for the gift of salvation through the cross of our Lord. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
