Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

Today’s Text: Zechariah 14:1-8 (Living Life Daily Devotional)

Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God, will return one day. He will come and all the holy ones with Him.

That day could be today.

I wish, I pray, that my heart would be more attuned to that truth—not to make me some wild-eyed fanatic who has lost touch with where people are and where they are coming from.

But I pray that my heart would be more attuned to that truth so that I might have more of Jesus’s perspective about people, and because of that, to love them more.

I’ve noted that the 2000th anniversary of the resurrection of Jesus will be coming up very soon—maybe 2033. My point is not to suggest that Jesus is coming back on the 2000th anniversary of His resurrection. The point is to reinforce the truth in our hearts that Jesus is indeed coming back, and that He could come back at any time.

I watched a podcast hosted by Carey Nieuwhof, and he interviewed an evangelist named JP Pokuda. And Pokluda made a similar case for why he believes that Jesus is coming back very soon. He noted that the Bible records 2,000 years from Adam to Abraham and 2,000 years from Abraham to Jesus. And it really doesn’t matter whether anyone considers time references in the Bible to be literal or symbolic. The fact is that the Bible records the time in that way.

And it is now almost 2,000 years since the resurrection of Jesus. Then Pokluda points out that Revelation talks about a thousand year reign of Jesus on this earth (Revelation 20). All of that adds up to a nice, round 7,000 years of human history.

Again, the point is not to suggest that Jesus is indeed coming back in 2033. The point for us believers is to examine our hearts with respect to how we feel about the truth that Jesus is indeed coming back, and that He might possibly come back today … or eight years from now in 2033.

To be completely honest, I both eagerly and fearfully anticipate His return. My eager anticipation is born of faith. My fearful anticipation is born of sin. And so my eager anticipation overrides my fearful anticipation, not because I have done anything to earn His salvation, but because of what He has done to secure my salvation. Praise the Lord.

Father, All things are in Your hands. I long for the day of my Lord’s return, but I confess that my longing is tinged with fear because of my sin. Cast out my unbelief and make me completely secure in the salvation You give. Furthermore, let my heart be attuned to the truth of His coming, so that my life may glorify You all the more. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
