See Something, Say Something

Today’s Text: Ezekiel 33:1-9 (Living Life Daily Devotional)

This morning, Grace and I went to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to send off our dear brother, Kyle Koshimizu, as he departed for his missions trip to Japan. While walking through the departure terminal, I noticed a familiar sign that many of us have probably seen. It read, "See Something, Say Something." It is a phrase meant to encourage travelers to report anything suspicious so others can be protected from danger.

Today's passage in Ezekiel 33 immediately brought that sign to mind. God appointed Ezekiel as the watchman for Israel, giving him the responsibility to warn the people whenever danger was approaching. If the watchman faithfully sounded the trumpet, the people had the opportunity to respond. However, if he remained silent, he would be held accountable for their blood. God applies this illustration to Ezekiel's ministry, reminding him that faithfully proclaiming His Word is not optional but a sacred responsibility.

Although Ezekiel's prophetic office was unique, every believer has been entrusted with the gospel. We live in a world filled with spiritual danger, yet many people are unaware of their need for Christ. It can be tempting to remain silent because we fear rejection or the reactions of others. However, genuine love that flows from Christ speaks the truth. We are not responsible for how people respond, but we are responsible for faithfully sharing the message God has entrusted to us.

This passage also reminds us that God's warnings are expressions of His mercy. He warns because He desires repentance, not destruction. Every time we hear God's Word, feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit, or receive loving correction from another believer, God is graciously calling us back to Himself. His warnings are invitations to experience His forgiveness before the day of judgment comes. He does not delight in judgment but lovingly calls sinners to repentance while there is still time. Ignoring His warnings hardens the heart, but responding in faith leads to life.

As I reflected on that airport sign, I was reminded that Christians are called to do more than simply "see something." We are called to lovingly "say something" by pointing people to Jesus Christ. Who has God placed in our life that needs to hear the hope of the gospel? May we faithfully sound the trumpet, trusting God to use His Word to bring others to repentance and faith in Christ.
