Titanic Fall of Pride
Today’s Text: Ezekiel 32:1-16 (Living Life Daily Devotional)
Ezekiel 32 records a lament over Pharaoh and Egypt. Egypt had long been one of the world’s superpowers, a nation that inspired both fear and admiration. Yet God describes Pharaoh not as a majestic king with an impressive aura, but as a monster in the waters. Though Pharaoh believed he ruled with unmatched strength, God declares that He will catch him in His net and leave him exposed before the nations. Even the sun, moon, and stars are poetically described as darkened because of Egypt’s downfall, emphasizing how severe this judgment would appear to those witnessing it.
The message is clear here that no earthly kingdom is beyond God’s authority and judgment. Every throne ultimately answers to the King of kings.
I think about the tragedy of the RMS Titanic in the early twentieth century. The ship was once considered the pinnacle of human engineering, and many confidently declared that it was impossible for it to sink. It was famously called “unsinkable.” Newspapers celebrated its size, luxury, and innovation. Yet, ironically and tragically, on its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg and sank into the icy waters of the Atlantic. More than 1,500 people lost their lives that fateful night. What many believed was invincible disappeared beneath the sea in just a few hours.
Human pride often convinces us that we are secure, but history repeatedly reminds us how quickly greatness can sink. The same danger exists in our own hearts. We may not rule nations, but we can place our confidence in ourselves. We take pride in our careers, finances, accomplishments, influence, and success. These are blessings and gifts from God, but they were never meant to be the foundation of our security. Anything built on human strength alone can disappear in a moment.
The good news is that while earthly kingdoms rise and fall, God’s eternal kingdom never does. Jesus taught us to build our lives on the solid rock of obedience to Him. Unlike Pharaoh’s kingdom, Christ’s reign cannot be shaken. Those who trust in Him possess a hope that outlasts every earthly success, every human achievement, and every kingdom this world has to offer. The only foundation that will never fail is the Lord Himself.
