The Life of a Disciple: A Life of Holiness
READ 1 THESSALONIANS 4:1-8
Have someone read the text aloud slowly to the House Church. Have a quiet moment for a minute after reading the passage so people can take time to reflect.
MAIN IDEA
God has called us to be set apart for Himself. Therefore, we are to continually pursue holiness by living in a way that pleases Him.
SUMMARY OF SERMON
Pleasing God through Holiness (v. 1-2)
A disciple’s faith should shape how he or she lives.
We pursue holiness as a response to God’s grace, not to earn salvation.
We continually grow in obedience with the purpose to please God.
Paul teaches that pleasing God involves practicing purity in our daily lives.
Practice Purity through Holiness (v. 3-6)
God calls believers to abstain from sexual immorality and exercise self-control.
We must bring our desires under God’s authority rather than allowing them to control us.
Sin is harmful not just to us individually but it brings harm to others around us.
Sin often begins with small compromises that gradually lead us away from God. Therefore it is important to set boundaries to abstain from the temptations of sin.
Temptation itself is not the same as sin but we must be careful not to entertain temptation and give it an opportunity to grow.
Like Joseph, we must choose to honor God rather than give into temptation.
True repentance involves turning away from sin and seeking to walk in obedience.
Pursue His Will through Holiness (v. 7-8)
God calls us to live holy lives that reflect His character and bring Him glory.
Sanctification means to be set apart for God and His purposes.
It is an ongoing process of becoming more like Christ.
The process of sanctification is different for each person.
To help us, God has given us the Holy Spirit to convict and guide us in obedience.
Our pursuit of holiness is not about becoming perfect overnight but about faithfully growing in Christ.
DISCUSSION QUESTION
What is one sin or temptation you struggle with that you need to depend on the Holy Spirit to overcome, and what practical steps can you take to pursue holiness and live in a way that pleases God?
