Manifesto of Mercy

READ LUKE 6:27-36
Have someone read the text aloud slowly to the House Church. Have a quiet moment for a minute after reading the passage so people can take time to reflect.


MAIN IDEA
Because God has shown us mercy through Christ, we are called to extend mercy to others, including our enemies, without expecting anything in return, reflecting the heart of our Father.


SUMMARY

  1. MERCY REACHES BEYOND (v. 27-31)
    Jesus calls upon His followers to extend mercy beyond the boundaries of human nature and loving, doing good, blessing, and praying for those who oppose, hurt, and mistreat them. The world teaches us to love those that love us and to retaliate when we are offended. But Jesus gives a radically different command than the world. Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.

  2. MERCY REJECTS EXPECTATIONS (v. 32-35a)
    Jesus teaches that true mercy is not measured by what we do for those who can repay us but by what we do for those who cannot give anything back. Loving friends who love us back and helping those that help us back, are natural responses and practices that even unbelievers observe. But Jesus says that mercy goes beyond that and includes loving our enemies without expecting any recognition or repayment.

  3. MERCY REFLECTS THE FATHER’S HEART (v. 35b-36) The ultimate reason Jesus calls upon us to show mercy is because mercy reflects the Father’s heart, the character of God Himself. The sovereign grace of God displayed on the cross was not given because we were faithful, but was extended to us when we wre ungrateful and wicked. We are called to imitate our heavenly Father by extending the same mercy we have first received. Our ability to love our enemies does not come from our own strength but from Christ. Finally, as children of God, our mercy towards others becomes a testimony that reveals the merciful heart of our Father to the world.
